The Soup Challenge

27 Oct

Do you like setting goals? Are you the type of person who is motivated and empowered by creating a plan? I am–it’s why I set the goal of running my first half marathon, it’s why I love school (teacher’s pet, right here!), and it’s how I’ve developed healthy discipline. Career advancement, physical health, critical thinking brain growth–these are all worthwhile by-products, right? At times though, I set goals that have no purpose other than to indulge my love of a projected, scheduled set of activities–even fun ones–that prove exactly nothing except that my freakishness extends far beyond soup love.

Serious Eats recently posted their 20 Favourite Fall Soups. Just ten minutes prior, I discovered SoupAddict. The universe (or again, my inner administrator) was obviously sending me the message that a soup challenge was necessary. But how can I possibly make it challenging without being wasteful? After all, there are only two people in our household and most soup recipes make at least 4 servings. So, a 20-in-20 challenge is out. Instead, I’ll endeavour to make two soups a week until I reach the end of the Serious Eats list. Doing so will not only save me from the overwhelming selection process of which new recipes I will try this week????” as I try and make the grocery list but it will also take me exactly to the week of Christmas.

Below is the list from Serious Eats but I reserve the right to substitute if I get sick of too much butternut squash-curry-flavour combos or I can’t help myself and have to venture out. To BLT Soup for example. My challenge, my rules people.

  1. Another Kale Bean Soup Recipe « savourytraveller - November 14, 2011

[...] The rest of the weekend here in Victoria was dark, drizzling and wind-blown. There’s something soul-stirring about gazing out at this skyline, knowing I would have missed this beauty if I’d stayed curled up in bed. Plus, breakfast is amplified to a spiritual experience after a big run or work out. And after taking a hot shower and putting on some fresh sweats, I heard that familiar rattle of drops on the skylight and settled on staying home for the rest of the day indulging my Soup Challenge.
