Can old houses be made more energy-efficient with wall insulation?

The huge hike in energy prices in 2022 unfortunately appears to be continuing into 2023/2024. Combined with the cost-of-living crisis, this means many people are now thinking about how they can reduce their energy bills in the long term.

What’s more, this is increasingly important as we all aim to reduce our energy consumption to fight climate change. The Energy Saving Trust has said that wall insulation is one of the key measures at our disposal to reduce our energy usage.

Why do old houses lose heat through walls?

The reason older houses can lose heat through their external walls is that single-skin walls, which are seen in houses built largely before the 1920s, are walls comprising a single layer with no cavity space between the outer brickwork and inner lining. Today, houses are built with cavities between these components that can be filled with insulation to trap heat in the home rather than it leaking outward and cold air seeping inward. This process is known as internal wall insulation and can be achieved by adding internal stud walls or rigid boards with inbuilt insulation.

Exterior wall insulation

You can also consider exterior wall insulation Weston Super Mare. This is a similar process to internal wall insulation but adds a layer of insulation to the outside walls and creates an exterior finish with cladding or rendering. This is an effective way of insulating a single skin wall but can affect the appearance of the property quite dramatically, so those thinking of exterior wall insulation should consider the impact carefully.

Exterior wall insulation may be an ideal option for those completely refurbishing a property and wishing to modernise the look.
