What to expect from house hunting in Cheltenham

If you’ve always dreamed of genteel Cotswold living, then Cheltenham is the ideal choice. A more English spa town you couldn’t hope to find. So, what can you expect from Cheltenham if you have decided to do some house hunting here?

You’ll be hooked when you see that not only is there heaps of heritage and culture but that the town has also been voted the best place in the country to raise a family. It’s said to be the safest place for young people to attend university and has some of the most beautiful and desirable property in the country. The town is most famous for its beautiful Regency architecture of the 19th century, which followed in the footsteps of the rich heritage of neo-classical Georgian housing also present in the town. The most noticeable Regency features include cream or white symmetrical frontage, iron railings, large sash windows and a column-flanked elevated front door accessed via stone steps. Expect to find high ceilings, large rooms and equally sizable asking prices! Period property does come at a premium but there are many different areas to choose from.

Pittville is another prime location brimming with Regency style. Some of the grand detached homes here overlook the beautiful Pittville Park. Some of the properties have been split into flats which makes the price a little bit more accessible if you have your heart set on this neighbourhood.  Here you’ll find the famous Pittville Pump Room and the birthplace of composer Gustav Holst.

Battledown is a charming area of old-fashioned narrow streets with predominantly late Victorian and Edwardian semi-detached housing. You’re more likely to more for your money here. There are some more modern homes that have been built to fit in with the heritage and elegance of the surrounding period properties. You’ll find independent shopping, cafes and antique stores.

St Mark’s is also close to the centre with a much wider selection of housing available that were mostly built between the two world wars. St Paul’s has a wide range of terraced housing, borders the lovely Pittville Park and is home to the University of Gloucestershire.

If you prefer living on the outskirts of town, the villages of Prestbury and Swindon Village are a short distance away. If you desire a period property older than the Regency style, here you will find thatched cottages and ancient churches alongside newer properties set in a beautiful agricultural landscape. Prestbury is the home of the world-famous Cheltenham Racecourse.

Up Hatherley is another area that has seen a lot of housing development since the Second World War. This area offers a good choice and variety of affordable housing yet still retains that quaint village feel. It’s close enough to the centre to enjoy the convenience but rural enough to enjoy the beauty of the county, with wonderful views of Leckhampton Hill.
