Why a lap tray is worth using

A laptop lets you work on the sofa or browse in bed, but balancing it on your knees can feel unstable and usually leaves you hunched over. A lap tray raises the screen to a better height, which reduces strain on your back and neck. Some bed trays have legs that sit either side of you, putting the screen at a comfortable viewing angle while you sit up in bed.

There are no known links between laptops and particular health problems, but excess heat on the groin can contribute to fertility issues in men. A tray keeps that heat away from your legs and also lets air circulate, which stops the laptop overheating.

Trays come in many designs, so there is one for most homes. Models with folding legs slot into small spaces when not in use, and some include storage for papers or cables so nothing gets lost in the duvet. Many can also be personalised with text or a photo.

Why posture and ventilation matter

Many of us spend hours hunched over a laptop in awkward positions, and that takes its toll. Long sessions can lead to eye strain, poor posture, wear on the spine and pain in the wrists, neck and shoulders, all of which make you less comfortable and less productive.

The laptop suffers too. Good ventilation and cooling are essential for performance and a long life, but balancing the machine on your knees or on a makeshift support can block the airflow. When not in use, laptops often get left anywhere, which exposes them to knocks and spills in places like the kitchen.

A well-chosen lap tray helps on both counts, whether you use it in bed, on the sofa or on a desk. When comparing models, look for something lightweight and portable, then consider extras such as storage for cables and papers, a cup holder, built-in speakers and a locking mechanism that holds the angle once you have found a comfortable position.
