Test Call Points and Detectors Weekly
Test all of the manual call points on a weekly basis, rotating through the sites so you test the first call point each week. This will ensure that all of the points are tested periodically. Test the smoke and heat detectors on a periodic basis using an aerosol smoke tester or heat gun instead of real smoke or flames.
Inspect the Control Panel for Faults
Check for any faults or warning lights on the control panel at the start of each week. This could indicate a broken circuit, a detector has been removed or communication with a part of the system has failed. Check Battery and Backup Power
Mains powered with battery backup, test and record the battery condition, change on manufacturers recommended date, generally between 3-4 years.
Clear Detector Heads of Dust and Obstructions
Dust, grease and cobwebs within detector heads can cause false alarms or reduce the time taken for the alarm to activate. Therefore when cleaning around detectors ensure that the detector heads are vacuumed or wiped clean with a dry cloth, avoid storing items, painting or decorating near detectors.
Keep the Fire Alarm Logbook Up to Date
Record every test, every fault, and every repair to the fire alarm system in the fire alarm logbook. The record must include the date on which the test, repair, etc was carried out and the signature of the person who carried it out. This is a requirement of the workplace fire safety responsibilities under UK law, and is intended to help protect the responsible person. It is only by maintaining an up to date and accurate log of fire alarm activity that the responsible person can be confident that the fire alarm system is functioning correctly.
Book Annual Servicing by a Qualified Engineer
On an annual basis (or twice yearly for higher risk / larger premises) a competent engineer should visit your property and complete a full fire alarm system inspection.
